Our Story

Innovation is a core belief of Rocking Z Acres. BJ McNeil and his aunt, Jonnie Zvonek, operate the farm together, caring for the land and their employees alike. Their love of farming comes from John Zvonek, Jonnie’s father and BJ’s grandfather. Jonnie grew up on the farm working with her dad, and BJ spent his youth working in the summers. BJ had a passion for farming from a young age.

When BJ started college, he began taking courses in aerodynamics and then business. However, in the end, farming was his passion. He received an Agriculture Engineering degree from Texas A&M. His grandfather passed in 1996, and BJ was given the opportunity to come back and farm with his aunt. When BJ and Jonnie started farming together, most of the land was tied up in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). As the acres were released, BJ began to farm them. As neighbors noticed how he managed and cared for the soil, some asked BJ if he was interested in farming their land. As the acres began to grow, the farm started to evolve.

As the farm grew, Jonnie and BJ were joined by several full-time and part-time employees. Precision farming became a staple of their operation, from prescriptions for planting and fertilizing to gathering yield data from the combines. Everything from tractor location to zoning of each acre is managed in the cloud. In 2009 their journey to a more responsible form of land management began. They incorporated biology into their soil fertility plans. They began planting cover crops and experimenting with adding microbes to the soil.

Finally in 2018, after seeing the benefits of biology and realizing they did not need to rely on commercial fertilizer and chemicals (Big Ag), they began their organic adventure. The innovations and research over the last 12 years have enabled Rocking Z Acres to evolve, and they now proudly produce 100% Certified organic winter wheat, corn, alfalfa, soybeans, and many other crops.
